Trio Garufa  are set to release El Rumor De Sus Tangos on June 19, 2012. The group are regarded as one of the foremost interpreter of Argentine Tango in recent times. The group is international in it’s make up but play a very authentic take on Argentine music. They are something of a throwback to the golden age of tango—playing music from the 1930 through the 1950s. But they also play modern Tangos.

They are based in the USA but play regularly at milongas in Buenos Aires—which is uncommon.

The band indeed, have their origin in milongas in the USA. A  San Francisco producer wanted live music at his events and they got together to perform once a month. The stuck together and developed a following and offers to play flooded in. Since they (2001) Trio Garufa have toured extensively in the USA and Canada (as well as, later, in Argentina).

Malambo Fusion Company is holding Argentine Folklore Classes with choreographer, dancer and instructor,  Claudio Ponce. Classes begin May 3, 2012 and continue every Thursday from 7 to 8:30 p.m.  at Seacoast Suites Ballroom, 5101 Collins Ave, Miami Beach.

A single class is $15 and a package of ten costs $120.

You can learn La chacarera, Gato and Escondidos, Zamba, Bombas and Boleadoras. You can also learn (and will learn over time) techniques including, arms posture, Zarandeo Simple (simple skirt movement), Zapateos (simple tappin), music and rhythm. Classes are open to all levels. Wear comfortable clothes (skirts for women best).

Ponce teaches Argentine folklore at Miami Contemporary Dance company and was elected as a member of the Internation Dance Council under UNESCO in 2011 for his efforts to promote Argentine folklore.  He is also the founder of Malambo Fusion Company.

Ok so this isn’t tango related. And yes, I have been slacking again on posting info but, in my defense, a lot of the press releases and event notices I get are hard to decipher!

Nonetheless I thought people in Chicago who are interested in dance might be interested in a free performance and QA with the Joffrey Ballet. They are having a free sneak peek of their Spring Desire program at Joffrey Tower, 10 East Randolph Street in Chicago on May 2 at 5:45 p.m. Dancers will perform excerpts and there will be a Q& A with artistic director, Ashley C. Wheater.

This is Tango Now-Identidad is in Chicago April 6 and 7, 2012. There are two shows each night and general admission tickets are $23. Reserved seats are $33. Find out more about the show HERE. To buy tickets go HERE.

On April 8, after the shows the American Tango Institute will have a milonga with the stars of the shows. If you attend the show Saturday tickets to the milonga are only $5. General Admission tickets are $15.

Alicia Pons is coming back to hold workshops in Chciago at ARTango, 4203 N. Ravenswood, Chicago, Illinois,  from March 8 to 15. There will also be a milonga on  from 10 p.m. til 2 a.m. Saturday, March 10 at Chicago Dance, 3660 W. Irving Park Road, Chicago. The classes are for intermediate and advanced level dancers.

The workshops are structured to built on one another. They will refine and improve your dancing. Limited spaces are available

Saturday, March 10, 2012 12:00-1:30 A: Connecting with Self: Posture, axis, relaxation, freedom, weight changes, elegance.

_ April Parker’s Mujer1 classes were a big hit in Atlanta. The milonga that followed the workshop found the teacher and wanted to know if there would be another class. Now, there will be.

The workshop will take place Sunday, March 11 and is limited to 12. You have to make a reservation in advance to take the class and you can do so here.

The cost is $20 and the workshop takes place from 2 to 4 p.m. Location will be given after registration (which has already begun).

_ Alicia Pons  is returning to Chicago from March 8 to 15, 2012 for a week of intensive tango workshops on March 10 and 11. There is an early bird discount but it ends in a couple of days (February 5).

These classes are for intermediate and advanced dancers and space is limited. They will also try to balance gender. You do need to sign up with a partner for individual class or full day pass. Private lessons will also be available. You can click HERE FOR MORE INFORMATION.

Pons, an accomplished dancer with refined technique. She is known for footwork and “sensual seduction.” She also works with a sense of humor in her classes.
